I believe this about nursing…”You may not make the most money or receive the highest recognition, but day in and day out you’ll be making the biggest difference in the lives of patients.”

It is this chance, this opportunity to provide care to those who truly need it that has brought me to the field of nursing. Growing up, a career in nursing or healthcare was never something I considered. I always had a desire to help others, but didn’t come upon the path that led to nursing until a few years ago. I was working full time after having graduated from college. I had all the things most young grads did: a decent salary, new car, plans to buy a house, etc. Yet I felt as though something was missing in my life. I wasn’t really making a difference in the lives of the people I interacted with; at least not as much as I’d hoped to in my career. I wanted to be the guy people turned to when they were hurt, sick or scared; the one who could provide crucial care that might save a life. In order to achieve this goal I’d set for myself, I knew it was time to head back to school.

A few years and several dozen undergraduate science credits later and I’m proud to be a new CNL student at the University of Maryland. Through hard work, the unwavering support of my family and friends and the generosity of the RWJF, I’m able to pursue my dream and work towards the career I want. I look forward to the time in the not-so-distant future where I will be able to practice as an RN and provide front line patient care to those in need. It will be both a great honor and a great responsibility, one which I do not take lightly.
