Essay

I believe this about nursing… “Nurses offer ‘exemplary service’ which consists of a mixed-recipe of scientific knowledge, training, and an appreciation for all things humane.”

My own experience as a patient, coupled with my experience as a mother whose son has had medical care, has only strengthened my gratitude for the men and women who have committed themselves to this field. Although I certainly would not wish to have experienced illness first-hand, I must candidly admit that my role as a patient enabled me to understand that treatment, healing and recovery are intricately connected to the knowledge and compassion of the professionals who offer the care. I know that the career I have chosen is physically and emotionally challenging, and often does not get the credit it is due, but I have witnessed first-hand the tremendous impact nurses have on the lives of the individuals who come into the hospital. It requires integrity and commitment, and I want nothing more than to join their ranks in offering excellent care.

In receiving the RWJF New Careers in Nursing Scholarship, it has eased my financial burden but equally important, if not more so, it has allowed me an opportunity to embark on a new learning path, one that will lead me to become a Registered Nurse. Things we do in life often have measurable results but the extent of the impact of this award is difficult to quantify. I am extremely grateful for the support.

As a nurse, I will continue in my efforts to live a healthy lifestyle and actively seek opportunities to advance my skills through professional development courses. After graduation, I plan to gain experience working as a staff nurse for 3-5 years, while continuing my education and fulfilling my ultimate goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist. Working as a staff nurse will help me to gain experience to provide assistance to those in under-served areas where people have limited or no access to healthcare. It is essential for people in these areas to have someone teach them the importance of preventative care, the benefits of remaining committed to healthy lifestyles and the value of good decision-making processes. I plan to offer disenfranchised populations excellent care.

I look forward to my future with great anticipation, and know that the time has come for me to realize my dreams.
