The NCIN program benefited the entire student body. The university made the skills coaching program available to all undergraduate students and the grant helped the nursing school develop a more comprehensive plan to recruit more students from backgrounds underrepresented in nursing.

The five NCIN scholars at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center received sup- port from a “student success manager,” who guided them through NCIN’s Pre-Entry Immersion Program, its leadership development activities, and its mentorship program. In addition, four scholars took advantage of a program offering students “individual success” skills coaching. Faculty and staff also benefited from the school’s participation in the NCIN program. The Division of Equity and Inclusion at UNM was asked to create a diversity workshop to strengthen cross-cultural communication and a university-wide “town hall” meeting was held to discuss a new diversity and excellence plan.
