The emphasis on practicing for the NCLEX proved helpful. The 2010 class had one of the highest mean scores on the HESI Exit Exam in the school’s history (the HESI Exit Exam evaluates a student’s readiness for the NCLEX exam).

Experts recommend that nursing students learn to make clinical judgments and that they practice taking NCLEX-style questions as part of their regular coursework. The NCIN program allowed faculty at South Dakota State University to help students prepare for the NCLEX exam by adding a module on study and testing strategies to the professional nursing course offered during the first term of the accelerated BSN program. Student response system questions, CD-ROM practice tests, and review book questions helped students practice answering NCLEX-style questions. Faculty met students one-on-one to further strengthen their test-taking and other skills.
