NCIN helped the University of Medicine and Dentistry NJ (UMDNJ) increase enrollment of underrepresented and economically challenged nursing students. To recruit, enroll, and retain a diverse student body and increase the diversity of program graduates, the school of nursing added faculty and staff; instituted academic support programs on two campuses; identified and supported students at academic risk; launched a peer-mentoring initiative that paired ethnically diverse students so they would work together; and built relationships with minority nursing associations to identify role models and mentors. The program provided opportunities for NCIN scholars to develop their leadership and mentor- ship skills by mentoring incoming scholars, presenting at recruitment events, and serving as representatives on school committees.
