One of the most satisfying aspects of a nurse is being able to care for patients at a time when they are in need. Determining a career path as a nurse is a decision that I deliberated on for a period of time and chose because of an accumulation of several driving forces. My admiration and respect for nurses and their noble work is one of my primary reasons for wanting to pursue this career. The other is the simple fact that the enormous depth of knowledge and the continual advances in treatment intrigues me.
As a child, I was raised by my grandmother while both of my parents were considered to be missing in action. My grandmother, whom I believed to be the most benevolent and selfless individual, instilled in me a set of values characterized by honesty, humility, hard work and a sense of altruism. These qualities, along with a sense of individuality and self-reliance, make me different from anyone else and will help me in future endeavors as I build a firm foundation of medical knowledge.
A couple of years ago, my brother was diagnosed with cancer; this was a very tough time for everyone in my family. This dramatic incident helped me understand that with determination, help from others and a strong will, anything is possible to overcome. From the nurses treating the cancer with chemotherapy, prescribing medication and the support of family friends, my brother overcame his illness. His cancer is currently in remission. In seeing my brother at his weakest point in life and having so much help from compassionate medical professionals, I decided to direct my career path toward nursing.
My positive experiences in life all come from the aspiration of helping others, resulting in my deep desire to become a nurse. After this detrimental life experience with my brother, I knew that nursing was the best career path for me to fulfill that desire. Having the opportunity to actually assist in physical examinations on patients, order and interpret diagnostic tests and initiate therapy are very captivating. My research revealed that nurses are known for their benign patient care.
As a nurse, I will contribute self sufficient and collaborative care to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. I will be serene as well as an educator to patients in issues of health and wellness. Most of all as a nurse, I will continue to have human compassion and promote true caring; it is these traits that are essential components of being a successful nurse. Nursing as an occupation has a great future and with a career as a nurse, there will be excitement and endless challenges each day.
