The college of nursing takes enormous pride in the diversity of its student body, faculty, and staff and is committed to recruiting and retaining a culturally diverse student population in both its undergraduate and graduate programs. To that end, SUNY integrated a “scholars as mentors” program into its Pre-Orientation Immersion Program. NCIN scholars helped incoming nursing students transition into the accelerated nursing program. SUNY Downstate Medical Center administrators have been key to the success of the program. The college of nursing received “High Needs Program” grant funds from SUNY Central that have supported hiring additional faculty to support program expansion.
Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree Program in Nursing:
This 15-month accelerated bachelor's undergraduate program at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center, College of Nursing, consists of 60 credits of classroom theory and supervised clinical practice. The 60 credits awarded by the College of Nursing, together with the 65 prerequisite credits for admission to the College, comprise the 125 credits required for graduation. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be awarded a B.S. degree with a major in nursing. These graduates will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam. Upon passing the NCLEX-RN, the graduates will have the license to practice as a registered nurse.
A bachelor’s degree in another discipline from a Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) regionally accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; 65 college semester credits from an accredited college or university including the following required prerequisite courses: Anatomy and Physiology I and II, with Labs (8 credits), Chemistry, with Lab (3-4 credits), Microbiology, with Lab (3-4 credits), Sociology or Anthropology (6 credits), Psychology (6 credits), English Composition (3 credits), English Elective ( 3 credits) Humanities /Social Sciences (12 credits), Statistics (3 credits); Two letters of recommendation from a college professor, an employer or supervisor; Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) to measure basic skills in 1) Reading, 2) Mathematics, 3) Science, and 4) English and Language usage.
